The start of a great conversation
The decision to begin a design journey is filled with excitement and possibility. Your first consultation with a designer is the pivotal first step—the moment your daydreams begin their transformation into a tangible plan.
While it’s my role to guide you, ask the right questions, and listen deeply, the most fruitful and inspiring consultations happen when you have had a chance to connect with your own vision first. This isn't a test you need to study for, but a moment of quiet reflection that will make our time together incredibly productive and focused.
To help you prepare, here are the three essential questions to ask yourself. Thinking through them will not only bring clarity to your own desires but will lay the groundwork for a truly collaborative and successful partnership.
The three questions to guide your thinking
Question 1: "Beyond what I like, how do I want to feel in this space?"

This is the most important question, and it moves us beyond aesthetics into the realm of emotion. A beautiful room that doesn't feel right is a design failure. So, close your eyes and imagine yourself in the finished room. What is the primary feeling you are seeking?
Are you craving a Sanctuary? A calm, quiet, and nurturing space that feels like a retreat from the world. Words like serene, peaceful, cozy, and restorative might come to mind.
Are you seeking a Hub? An energetic, welcoming, and social space perfect for gathering with family and friends. You might think of words like vibrant, welcoming, lively, and comfortable.
Do you need a place of Focus? A clear, organized, and inspiring environment that promotes productivity and creativity. Words like clarity, order, inspiration, and calm focus might resonate.
Jotting down these "feeling" words gives us a powerful emotional compass that will guide every design decision we make together.
Question 2: "What are the daily frustrations? What isn't working for me right now?"

The best designs are elegant solutions to everyday problems. Before we can create a space that works beautifully, we need to be honest about what is currently causing friction in your daily life. This is about function, flow, and the small annoyances that add up.
Think through your daily routines in the space:
"There's nowhere to put down my keys and the mail when I walk in the door."
"The lighting in the living room is terrible for reading."
"We always end up with a pile of bags and shoes in this one corner."
"The path from the kitchen to the dining table feels awkward and cramped during dinner parties."
Making a list of these "friction points," no matter how small, is invaluable. It gives us a clear set of problems to solve, ensuring your new space will not only be beautiful but will function flawlessly for the way you actually live.
Question 3: "In a year's time, what would make me feel this project was a true success?"

This question helps us define success on your terms, and it goes far beyond the final look. A truly successful project is a holistic victory. Consider what a successful outcome means to you across these four areas:
Aesthetic Success: The space looks and feels like a true and beautiful reflection of my personality.
Functional Success: The daily frustrations we identified are gone. The home works intuitively for me and my family.
Financial Success: The project was completed within the agreed-upon investment level, and I feel the value I received was exceptional.
Process Success: The journey itself was enjoyable, collaborative, and free from overwhelming stress. I felt heard and guided throughout.
Thinking about success in this complete way ensures we are aligned on all fronts and working towards the same, clearly defined goal.
Clarity is the first step
Taking the time to reflect on these questions will transform your first consultation from a simple meeting into a powerful, collaborative workshop. You will arrive with a newfound clarity that will allow us to dive deeper, faster, and begin crafting a home that is a perfect and lasting reflection of you.
