This spectacular lamp base is an exquisite example of Art Nouveau and Neoclassical influence, typical of fine decorative lighting from the late 19th or early 20th century. Crafted from bronze composite, the piece depicts two full-length female figures, or muses, dressed in flowing classical garments. They stand on a heavy, oval base and collaboratively hold the light source: their opposing raised arms meet to support the central brass light socket and bulb. The figure on the right gracefully holds a cornucopia of fruit or flowers in her free hand. The sculpture is finished with a deep, dark patinated bronze or verdigris effect, lending it a rich, aged look. A braided fabric cord accents the design as it descends between the figures. This highly detailed piece makes a sophisticated statement, where the figures themselves serve as the lamp's illuminating column.
